The several Baldwin monuments to World War II veterans have been planted in different spots in town over the years. They have enjoyed different views of the world - almost like a reflection in the eyes of the veterans themselves.

The first monument was a modest plaque erected in 1942 inside the high school, a place that would send the bulk of its male graduates to the war between 1941 and 1945. The plaque listed the several hundred then in service.

An updated version moved in 1947 - now listing more than 2,000 names, including those of 56 killed or missing - to a spot on the plaza outside the Baldwin train station. In the sprawling, unincorporated municipality of Baldwin, this was the closest thing to the center of town. Many veterans would see it there on their way to and from work.

In 1973, possibly because of a different political climate but mainly for reasons of consolidation, the World War II monument was moved to a quiet spot in a corner of Silver Lake Park, a rolling ribbon of paths and greens just south of Merrick Road, where it took up residence next to monuments honoring veterans of World War I, Korea and Vietnam.

The World War II monument needed refurbishing. Unlike the others, which were made of stone, it had been cast in metal and plastic intended only to last until a proper granite one was made. The members of American Legion Post 246, Baldwin, vowed to do it as soon as possible.

Fund-raising began in 1973, though in truth it was not the top priority of the post at the time. The men had jobs to go to, children to help raise, charitable works to undertake. And at the two meetings a month at the American Legion hall, they were usually busy with near-term events.

Vandalism and weather took their toll. Occasional repairs were made, but the monument became cracked and sort of gap-toothed-looking - an image that while not exactly shocking managed to gnaw at people.

One day about three years ago, for instance, past commander Charles Jamison saw a picture in a magazine of a handsome granite war monument somewhere else.

"We should have that," said Jamison, a retired Nassau County worker who is a Korean War-era vet. "We always meant to do it. The World War II guys are not getting any younger. We figured they should be honored while they were alive."

He checked with the monument committee. About 25 years after fund-raising began, there was about $2,000 in the till. He decided to pick up the pace. Jamison's wife, Maria Jamison, and a cadre of family, friends and fellow veterans wrote letters, talked to community groups, set up a fund-raising goal "thermometer" poster at the train station, knocked on doors house-to-house in the town where the Jamisons have lived for 38 years.

A $15,000 state grant arranged by state Sens. Dean Skelos and Charles Fuschillo was their first break. After that, money started coming in. In all, $50,000 was raised, most of it in Baldwin.

More than raising money, though, compiling the list of names that would go on the new monument - a granite monument with brass name plates - accounted for the biggest labor in this labor of love.

They started with the original names, then checked old lists carried in the Baldwin Herald newspaper, old lists in the American Legion files and lists in government records available on the Internet. The criteria were: men and women who lived in Baldwin at the time of entering service in World War II. When people heard what they were doing, they called the Jamisons and their co-organizer and friend, Jill Sandhaas Martinez, to add or correct other names.

One man, for instance, who was on the original plaque, called to make sure his name would be included on the new one. His name was Jerry Sears.

"Jerry Sears. Jerry Sears. I'm sorry, we don't have that name here. Is that the only name you go by?" Maria Jamison said into the phone.

"Yes! That's my name! Jerry Sears! Are you sure I'm not there?"

"We do have a Floyd Sears. Are you related?

"No! Yes! That's me! Floyd Sears! Everybody calls me Jerry ..."

Telephone conversations like that happened almost nightly for a while in the various homes of the core organizers.

In the end, the monument group settled on a list of 2,292 names, including the 56 killed or missing in action.

The work finished, the contractor employed, the names cast, the landscaping tidied, the new monument is scheduled to be unveiled on Monday in Silver Lake Park, immediately following the annual Baldwin Memorial Day parade down Grand Avenue.

Charles Jamison, a large man in his 70s who walks with a cane, went to a doctor's appointment Friday afternoon, then came home to wrap up a few details about Monday.

Outside his house, a "For Sale" sign hung. "We just bought a retirement home in Pennsylvania," he said - looking at his wife across a dining room table cluttered with photocopied documents, old photos, old newspapers and announcements about the unveiling of the memorial that has embraced their lives in the past few years.

They wouldn't have felt right about leaving, they said, until the permanent monument was in place.
